Meet Kiya, a 4-year-old female Maltese. Kiya was rescued from a home that had too many dogs that were being kept in small, uncleaned cages. She and two friends Elton, a Poodle, Control #1154764, and Gabe, a Chihuahua mix, Control #1154761, are the only ones left at the shelter out of the 33 that were rescued. She was very badly matted when she arrived, officials said. All are looking for new Forever Homes. Kiya is sweet and friendly little girl and can curl up on your lap and keep you company, Shelter officials said. Please come by and visit with her at Kennel #34. When making inquiries on me please reference my Control Number I1154769. About this column: The Inland Valley Humane Society (http://www.ivhsspca.org/) operates a shelter for …

Walnut High School Drama and Suzanne Middle School Drama hold year-end production.
“How do you measure a year?” This was the theme explored by drama students on Thursday night at the Walnut High School Performing Arts Center. Walnut High School Drama and Suzanne Middle School Drama held their spring show with scenes, one-acts, and improvisation. A few years ago, Joanne F. Karr, Walnut High School drama’s supervising director, and Helen Papadopoulos, Suzanne Middle School’s supervising director, decided to team up for the year-end production. “We decided to involve Suzanne Middle School kids to help them transition to the drama department here,” said Karr. Both comedic and dramatic moments were highlighted on the stage. “My favorite was ‘Dying Light’ – it was so sweet how she talked about falling in love, talked about her…
Alex Chin spreads a love of Shakespeare with help from a furry friend.
Because we work out in the community, we "Patchers" get to meet a lot of great people. Recently, my co-worker Melanie Johnson and I ran into one cool raccoon. No joke. Introducing Richard the racoon and his, ahem, spokesman Alex Chin, of Diamond Bar. The duo was having lunch at Chik-fil-A in Industry, where the two had made such a splash. Turns out Chin will take the puppet out with him from time to time, where the two entertain people by reciting Shakespeare. So what is Chin and Richard’s favorite work? Why King Richard, hence the puppet’s name.

The Sam Shephard play opens tonight and runs through May 20.
The Cal Poly Pomona theatre department presents Sam Shepard's "Curse of the Starving Class," a dark comedy that deals with the breakdown of the American Dream. The show will open tonight and run through May 20. "Curse of the Starving Class" portrays a family living in California during the decline of the family farm and the disappearance of unspoiled land. The play will feature, for the first time, one of Cal Poly Pomona's own lambs. The lamb is on stage for much of the performance and occasionally acts as a non-verbal participant that characters direct monologues toward. Working with a live animal on-stage proved a challenge, but getting it from the university made the process much easier. "We're very fortunate to be able to get the lamb …

Suzanne Middle School Drama Department will present a new play "Nerd Girls," the final production of the year, on April 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. This Saturday, all the actors will be introduced during a special red carpet event after a preview performance for family, friends, the author, and his family. '"Nerd Girls" was written by Alan Sitomer, one of my fellow California Teachers of the Year from 2007,” said math and drama teacher Helen Papadopoulos. Sitomer wrote the book for Disney and then turned it into a play for Suzanne. “We are the first school ever to be able to put on the play and after that, he will be selling the rights to it to other schools who want to put it on. The pace, production, and popularity of today’s crop of television reality shows may seem a bit unreal to some. But to Mt. San Antonio College Professor Dan Smith, it’s all part of the industry that is growing by leaps and bounds and is the reason for the debut of Mt. SAC’s new Reality Show Production class, the only one of its kind in the state and maybe the nation. “As far as I can tell, there is no other educational institution in state—perhaps the nation—that offers a reality show production course like this,” said Smith, who has been teaching television production at Mt. SAC for 14 years. While there are other colleges that offer reality show survey courses, the Mt. SAC class is the only one that offers students hands-on production …

I think this is a great idea. I left my first Job at Fox Sports to go work on a Reality TV show. On my last day, a producer wished me luck because he said they wouldn't be around forever. The shooting style has crossed-over into scripted shows in the form of Docu-Drama shooting, like The Office on NBC and Modern Family on ABC. These are sitcoms that cut to Interviews.   more ›
