Outgoing Walnut Councilman Joaquin Lim had his years of service down to the days - 6,305 to be exact. Wednesday night marked his final one in office after 17 years on the dais. He looked on as re-elected council members Nancy Tragarz and Antonio “Tony” Cartagena, as well as newcomer Eric Ching were sworn in. When the oaths were given, Lim offered some words of thanks to city staff and community members and touted a few of what he helped to accomplish in his four terms, including construction of the new City Hall, the reduction of crime in West Walnut, and success at thwarting the city of Industry’s efforts to build a huge materials recovery facility of Grand Avenue. “All of these accomplishments were only made possible because of each …

Jay Chen, a Hacienda-La Puente school board president and small business owner running for the 39th Congressional District covering Diamond Bar, Walnut and Fullerton, made the claims against Royce, his Republican opponent and longtime congressman.
Jay Chen, the Democratic candidate campaigning for the newly drawn 39th District's House of Representatives seat this year, claimed his Republican opponent Ed Royce attended a "hate rally" aimed at an Islamic fundraising group in Yorba Linda last year. In a phone interview, Chen also alleged that Royce, a 20-year veteran in the House and representative from the former 40th District covering parts of north and central Orange County, made comments at that rally rejecting multiculturalism in the United States. "We want to let voters know who he is, because that's just not going to fly in a district that is 30 percent Latino, 30 percent Asian. We can't have that kind of representative," Chen said. "He's made comments about wanting all federal…

Incumbents Nancy Tragarz and Antonio "Tony" Cartagena were re-elected.
With the final absentee ballots counted today, challenger Eric Ching had enough votes to secure a seat on the Walnut City Council. The 44-year-old businessman was in fourth place in the race for three seats following last Tuesday’s election, but only 51 votes separated him from Los Angeles County Sheriff Lt. John Saleeby headed into today’s final tally. After vote by mail ballots were counted for five of the six precincts, Ching had gone ahead of Saleeby by just one vote – 1,902 to Saleeby’s 1,901. When the final precinct was counted, Ching pulled ahead, finishing with 1,984 votes to Saleeby’s 1,952. Mayor Nancy Tragarz finished with the highest vote total at 2,468 followed by Councilman Antonio “Tony” Cartagena with 2,002. Challenger …
City officials will tally several hundred absentee ballots from last week's city council election.
While Walnut residents went to the polls last Tuesday to cast their ballots for three city council members, the election process is not quite done. City officials today will count several hundred absentee ballots, starting at 11 a.m., at City Hall. Last week’s unofficial results had Mayor Nancy Tragarz with the highest number of votes at 2,135. Behind her was fellow incumbent Councilman Antonio “Tony” Cartagena, who received 1,746 votes. Challenger John Saleeby, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant, received the third highest vote total so far with 1,700, followed by businessman Eric Ching with 1,649. Ching finished fourth Tuesday in the race for three council seats, but absentee ballots are still to be counted.
Win or lose after the absentee ballots are counted Monday, Walnut City Council challenger Eric Ching said he will continue to fight for the causes he believes in. Ching currently has 1,649 votes as of Tuesday night’s unofficial count, finishing fourth behind Lt. John Saleeby in the race for three seats. Saleeby received 1,700 votes. However, the election is not quite over. Officials announced after the unofficial results were released that several hundred (see correction) absentee ballots remain to be counted. Those will be tallied on Monday. “I still feel pretty good,” Ching said. “If we have more vote by mails, I think our chances are pretty good.” Ching pulled papers to run for council on the last day possible. He said that the …
Here are a few snaps from Tuesday's Walnut City Council election.
Thousands of voters headed to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots for three seats in the Walnut City Council race. The day included hard work from poll workers, city staff, and also candidates, who spent up until the polls closed walking precincts and calling voters. Here are a few photos from the day, with some shots from the campaign season thrown in for good measure.
Mayor Nancy Tragarz, Councilman Antonio "Tony" Cartagena, and challenger John Saleeby have the three highest vote totals so far with the unofficial results in Tuesday night.
After a hotly contested battle that included stolen and destroyed campaign signs, rumors, and squabbling over issues such as the red light camera and council benefits, Walnut Mayor Nancy Tragarz seemed relieved Tuesday night that the election season is coming to a close. “It’s been a long three months,” she said. “I worked really hard, and I campaigned really hard.” While Tragarz has a good distance from her fellow council candidates in votes, she will have to wait until the absentee ballots are counted on Monday to know the official results. However, unofficial tallies released Tuesday night have her well in the lead with 2,135 votes. In the Walnut City Council race, five candidates are vying for three seats. Besides Tragarz, fellow …
