As part of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, Southland utility companies today joined their counterparts statewide to urge customers to keep their dogs secure when utility employees enter residential and business properties. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite about 4.5 million people every year in the country, and about 20 percent of the injuries require medical attention. Although children are the most common victims, dozens of utility employees in California are moderately to severely injured by dogs each year. The utilities circulated the following tips to provide a safe environment for both pets and utility employees: The statewide public information campaign is being conducted by the Southern …

City Manager Rob Wishner said at the workshop that the budget projections are very conservative. “Again, we are pleased to present a balanced budget,” he said. “Our resources do exceed our appropriations for the proposed fiscal year by a small margin, but that’s a compliment given what we see and experience……

Congressman Joe Baca introduced a bill that could cut off federal transportation grants for Los Angeles World Airports unless it sells Ontario International Airport to inland cities.
An Inland Empire congressman has introduced a bill that seeks to cut off federal transportation grants for Los Angeles World Airports -- including LAX -- unless the city-owned agency sells Ontario International Airport to inland cities, it was reported today. Rep. Joe Baca, D-Ontario, introduced the bill Friday. He told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that he is tired of "delay tactics" that he said the City of Los Angeles is using to keep control of the Ontario airport, 36 miles east of the Los Angeles city limits, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Several cities, including Diamond Bar, Walnut, Industry and Claremont, have joined forces to call for the airport's sale. Passenger traffic has dropped by a third and the number of …

A budget plan that relies on voters' approval of $50 billion in new taxes is not the "smartest of moves," Huff says
Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) discussed Governor Jerry Brown's May budget revision released earlier this week. The Governor's plan contains $8.3 billion in proposed cuts and a $50 billion tax hike over seven years, according to a Huff office news release. It also represents a $30 billion increase in state spending since 2007-08, the release said. The revise attempts to close a budget gap of $15.7 billion but Huff officials said the independent Legislative Analysts' Office reports the deficit numbers are probably "north of $17 billion" and could grow even higher. "Senator Huff believes that basing a budget plan on a bet that voters will approve $50 billion in new taxes this November isn't the smartest of moves," …

The city council is expected to vote next week on a proposed $900,000 settlement in the Zen Center case.
The Zen Center lawsuit could be settled next week. The Walnut City Council on Wednesday will consider approving a $900,000 settlement with Chung Tai International Chan Buddhist Association. Besides the monetary compensation, the proposed settlement agreement calls for a public apology to be read into the record and posted on the city’s website, according to a memo City Attorney Michael Montgomery wrote to the council. A settlement has been brewing since April. Montgomery announced at a Planning Commission meeting last month that a settlement was being negotiated. On April 11, the city council approved an agreement in concept and requested that Montgomery return with the formal documents. The U.S. Department of Justice filed the original …

Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez' office is under investigation.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said today County Assessor John Noguez -- whose office is the target of a corruption probe -- should resign. When asked if he had concerns about Noguez continuing to work as assessor, Cooley told reporters, "Yes, I do. I don't think he should be there." "In my view, he should resign in light of everything that's come out publicly and because it's interfering with the discharge of that importantoffice's critical functions," the county's top prosecutor said. "And I think that a change over there is entirely appropriate so that some changes in personnel and other reforms can be implemented to restore the integrity of the organization." A spokesman for the Assessor's Office referred inquiries …

The state's Republican leader said they had been working to close the gap, but were not getting support from the Democrats.
State Senator Bob Huff issued an “I told you so” Monday following the release of Governor Jerry Brown’s revised state budget, which cuts $8.3 billion in an effort to close a $15.7 billion deficit. Huff pointed out that Democrats had the chance to avoid a deficit, but failed to act. “Unfortunately, the Governor’s increased budget deficit was predictable,” said Huff, the Senate Republican Leader. “Senate Republicans have consistently raised concerns that last year’s majority vote budget relied on too many phony spending reductions, other irresponsible revenue assumptions, and gimmicks. As state revenues have been increasing, total spending has also increased by $20 billion since the 2007-08 state budget.” In a YouTube video posted Saturday, …

The LOSMD areas were formed in the 1980's to pay for landscaping in the open spaces of new tracts in Walnut. They WERE intended also to pay for the staff costs and benefits specifically associated with the districts. That is how a "district" functions. In many districts costs were flat for years. In some, costs lowered by the City as water efficient irrigation and some reclaimed water was …   more ›
