A new teaching style gives students a chance to learn online at home.
C.J. Morris Elementary fourth grade teacher Tara Noelte is head over heels about using a new teaching style in her classroom. For the past few months, she has utilized the “Flipped” method of teaching. Flipping the classroom is a concept where the teacher videotapes and posts lessons online for students to watch at home on their laptops. Noelte’s students each have personal MacBook laptops for both school and home use through the school’s innovative iImagine One-2-One laptop program. When the fourth graders come back the following day, they engage in activities based on the lesson that they viewed the night before. As part of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, Southland utility companies today joined their counterparts statewide to urge customers to keep their dogs secure when utility employees enter residential and business properties. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite about 4.5 million people every year in the country, and about 20 percent of the injuries require medical attention. Although children are the most common victims, dozens of utility employees in California are moderately to severely injured by dogs each year. People throughout Southern California gathered individually and in groups Sunday to take in the enthralling view of a late afternoon solar eclipse. Mt. SAC's Randall Planetarium offered the public a chance to view the solar eclipse through its specialized telescopes. The eclipse started at 5:24 p.m. and ended at 7:42 p.m., according to Griffith Observatory officials. A solar eclipse happens when the moon moves in front of the sun from a particular viewpoint on Earth, obstructing a portion of the sun's visibility for a time. At it's peak at 6:38 p.m., Sunday's eclipse made 85 percent of the sun invisible to greater Los Angeles. The Walnut City Council Wednesday night will consider adopting a $19.8 million budget and approving $1.6 million in planned Capital Improvement Program projects. The proposed 2012-13 budget includes $19,766,160 in projected revenues and $19,755,780 in expenditures, for a surplus of $10,380, according to the staff report. Earlier this month, city staff and the council had a budget workshop where they discussed the financial outlook. A DUI motorist is suspected of causing a rollover crash that blocked all lanes of the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar early Sunday. The crash just east of the northbound Orange (57) Freeway, was reported about 4 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs told Patch. The lanes remained blocked for a short time and the motorist suffered minor injuries, Jacobs said. Charges were pending.

Walnut Pony Baseball Saturday finished their season with some league championship play and a closing ceremony. League board members and coaches gave out trophies to teams in the Foal, Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony divisions.
