How to Avoid Shingles After Age 50

An FDA-approved vaccine cuts risk of the painful infection by 70 percent.

I wasn't planning to think about shingles all week, but couldn’t avoid it. It started with an email from a close friend saying she had the painful skin rash, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. I winced, recalling my own bout of shingles, when I drove to and from work every day, steering with my right hand and holding the seat belt away from my torso with my left, because the pain from having the belt touch the rash on my rib cage was intolerable. The next day, I came across a 2011 Institute of Medicine report on chronic pain.  One of the leading causes? Post-herpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain that sometimes follows shingles, and which can last anywhere from weeks to years. The shingles theme continued the next day when I saw my…

No Milk Today?

Unless you consume nearly 2 pounds of dairy products daily, you may not be getting enough calcium. But there are alternatives.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans consume 630 pounds of milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream every year, a number that could increase when the agency updates its report in July. Dairy products, particularly low-fat varieties, can be excellent sources of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. But there are other choices for people who don’t like dairy, follow a vegan diet, or are among the 60 percent of adults worldwide who can’t digest milk products. Plenty of nondairy food sources deliver the calcium you need to help keep your bones strong. How much calcium is enough? If you’re older than 50, you need 1,200 mg of …

Letter to the Editor

Thank You CHP Volunteers

The Baldwin Park CHP serves Walnut and Diamond Bar.

Throughout the year, there are numerous days and weeks designated to honor groups and/or individuals.  The week of April 15th is designated as National Volunteer Week and the men and women who comprise this very special group are often under-recognized.  As the commander of the CHP office in Baldwin Park, I am incredibly fortunate to have a cadre of senior volunteers that exemplify exactly what it means to fill such a special role.  The ten men and one woman who give unselfishly of their time and energy donated over five thousand hours of service in 2011.  Some assist the support staff working in the office, others participate in ride alongs with officers, many attend impaired driver checkpoints and hand out literature to those driving …

Weigh In: Which Walnut Streets Have the Worst Speeders?

Is there a street in town where motorists go too fast? Tell us about it.

Even in a city as laid back and quiet as Walnut, some motorists sure seem to be in a hurry to get where they’re going. They ride the rear of slower moving cars then zoom by other drivers, engines roaring. Which streets in Walnut do you think have a speeding problem? Which thoroughfares feel more Autobahn than avenue?  Residents in the past have expressed concerns about fast moving cars on Amar Road.  Others have made mention of Meadowpass Road, Grand Avenue, and Pierre Road. Tell us in comments below which streets make you yell, “Slow down!”
