4:39 p.m. - The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that seven people were injured in the crash today on the 60 Freeway. At least five vehicles were involved in the multiple-collision accident. The accident began after debris fell out of the back of a pick up truck, forcing the vehicie directly behind it to swerve out of the way. The backup goes to the 60 freeway as of 3:15 p.m.
A fatal accident on the northbound 57 freeway is blocking several lanes and causing backup to the 60. The lanes are blocked at Temple Avenue in Pomona. According to a posting on the Cal Poly Pomona Facebook page, the 57 north of Temple Avenue "will remain congested for several hours today after a motorist collided with a Caltrans truck, resulting in a fatality. Four lanes will remain closed until at least 5 p.m." UPDATE, 4:45 p.m.: The San Gabriel Valley Tribune is reporting that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident who died at the scene was a white man around the age of 20. CHP Officer Christian Cracraft told the Tribune that a Caltrans truck was sweeping when a car, possibly a Toyota Corolla, hit the back of it.

During the Tuesday night Diamond Bar City Council meeting, city staff gave an update on the 57/60 freeway “Big Fix” project, which officials say will help alleviate traffic issues. Where the 57 and 60 freeways merge stretches for two miles, and according to City Manager James DeStefano, the interchange “creates gridlock” that “spills over into our community.” About 350,000 vehicles make their way through this area every day. The driver crashed into bushes just east of Diamond Bar Boulevard.
A drunken driver who ran off the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar and crashed into some bushes was arrested today, a California Highway Patrol officer said. The accident, just east of Diamond Bar Boulevard, was reported about 4:40 a.m., and the driver was booked on suspicion of drunken driving at the Sheriff's Walnut/Diamond Bar station, CHP Officer Ed Jacobs said. The name of the uninjured driver was unavailable early today.

The male driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck struck another car at the interchange and rolled over.
A two car collision at the interchange of the 60 and 57 freeways resulted in a vehicle roll over and minor injuries. At 11:51 a.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to a 911 call of a crash on the interchange of the two freeways. A male driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck was headed westbound on the 60 freeway. While attempting to transition to the 57 freeway at the last minute, he struck the orange barrel-like attenuators on the side of the highway and lost control of his truck, CHP Officer Kerri Rivas said. The driver of the truck struck a 2004 Lexus. The Dodge rolled over as a result of the collision, Rivas said. Jerry Brown today declared a state of emergency in response to the fiery tanker truck accident that forced the closure of the Pomona (60) Freeway in Montebello, where crews are now working to demolish the Paramount Boulevard bridge. "It is hereby ordered that all agencies of the state government utilize and employ state personnel, equipment and facilities for the performance of any and all activities consistent with the direction of the California Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Plan," Brown's declaration states. MONTEBELLO - Traffic was moving again today on a portion of the Pomona (60) Freeway that was closed following a gasoline tanker truck fire that caused structural damage to a freeway overcrossing, and Caltrans said it hoped to reopen the entire eight-mile stretch of roadway by Friday night. The freeway was shut down between the Long Beach (710) and San Gabriel River (605) freeways after a double-tanker truck caught fire on the eastbound 60 Freeway partially beneath the Paramount Boulevard overcrossing shortly after noon Wednesday. No arrests were made during the stop on the 71 freeway after it was discovered that the gun was a toy.
POMONA (CNS) - A child playing with a toy gun in the backseat of a vehicle stirred up trouble today on a freeway in Pomona, sheriff's officials said. The incident was reported at 3:11 p.m. on the Chino Valley (71) Freeway near the Pomona (60) Freeway, said Sgt. R. Causey of the Walnut sheriff's station. A motorist called authorities and reported seeing another motorist brandishing a gun from a vehicle carrying two adults and at least one child on the freeway, Causey said. Sheriff's deputies responded to the area only to discover the weapon was a toy, Causey said. No arrests were made, but Causey said he hopes the parents "will have a talk with the children after this.'' No one was injured in the incident.

CITY OF INDUSTRY - Engineers for the Alameda Corridor-East Construction Authority are at work on preliminary designs for the Fairway Drive Grade Separation Project. The initial design plans are expected to be completed in early 2012 for the project slated for Fairway near the 60 freeway, according to officials. Estimated cost of the project, currently in the engineering stages, is $81 million. The project calls for Fairway to be lowered under the existing Union Pacific Railroad and Metrolink tracks in the City of Industry and in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, according to the Authority.
